I am moved by fancies that are curled
Around these images, and cling:
The notion of some infinitely gentle
Infinitely suffering thing.
Wipe your hands across your mouth, and laugh;
The worlds revolve like ancient women
Gathering fuel in vacant lots.
T. S. Eliot ~ Preludes
I have become impatient to assume the world. Fresh from submitting my Master’s thesis on Neo-Gothic fiction, I have just about enough words left in me to document the time after, and what will soon become the time before.
Unlike others in my position – freshly minted Master? (almost) – I have decided not to embark on the job search just quite yet. I have also turned down a generous scholarship and a PhD candidacy at my alma mater, which has been my home and comfort for the past six years.
Instead, my boyfriend and I will be… travelling. I know it might sound just a tad cliche – who isn’t travelling nowadays? Who isn’t embarking on a soul-searching journey that is meant to reveal their lives to them before they settle down and actually live?
Here’s the thing though: we’re tavelling on what was a shoestring budget before the Rand crashed and burned and basically halved our savings. We’re travelling for three months in the Schengen zone on the abysmal currency of South Africa, and we are not in positions to be doing so at all. But the tickets were booked before the crash. R7500 has already been spent. It is too late to turn back now. Wipe your hand across your mouth, and laugh…
So what you’ll see on this blog is my prelude to the next phase of my life. Since I will be travelling in The Netherlands and hopefully surrounds, I will post some travel pieces, tips and ideas. There will be pictures – lots of them. Since I’m also trying to establish some form of income in the way of freelancing, there will be some of that on here too. And for the hell of it, there will be some cooking, baking, Gothic history and literary intrigue.
This is a prelude that has the potential to turn into its own adventure. I hope to record it here.
